Kevin Zalewski (IBDP Co-Chair
Membership Committee)
Interview by Guy Cleveland
1. Welcome Kevin, please tell us about yourself.
I live in Jersey City and have been working in NYC construction for the past 10 years. In addition to being co-chair of the IBDP Membership Committee, I enjoy my involvement on the Corenet NYC Proptech committee. I have played soccer my entire life and enjoy an active lifestyle including golf, tennis, hiking and more. I listen to podcasts every day – let me know if you need any recommendations!
2. Where do you work and what is your role? When/how did you get started there?
I work at DFB Sales. We manufacture locally in LIC and install acoustic/fabric wrapped wall/ceiling systems as well as draperies and window treatments for the commercial markets. I joined DFB recently in March of 2023 as Vice President of Contractor Sales. I was recruited to join the team due to my 10 years of experience project managing and selling as a specialty trade subcontractor in New York City.
3. List some factors that contribute to your success.
Curiosity and constant desire to both learn – podcasts, books, conferences, speaking events etc. Even when it doesn’t directly apply to your role – you never know when it could help you. Implement what you learn immediately and reflect on it. Then teach or tell it to someone else. This will help it crystalize in your mind and also help your friends.
Also, attending in person events and getting involved in committees to connect with people on a personal level. I can be very introverted and many times I do not want to go to events. After events many times I did not think it was going to help my career. But, you build relationships that prove fruitful years in the future.
4. Give advice to those starting their careers in Business Development
Start a small informal networking group with a few like-minded people who work in your industry. Get together once a month or so to have fun, make connections, invite one another to upcoming events, celebrate successes, commiserate etc. I did this 10 years ago and it was extremely helpful for me. We formed a bond that extended beyond work and have attended one another’s weddings, birthday parties etc.
5. What is your passion?
I am passionate about consulting with clients to help make the right decision about products that they are going to use. I love helping to come up with a solution that delights and improves the project outcome even if it means recommending a product that I cannot supply. Also, I am passionate about connecting colleagues who can help one another out for a win/win.
6. Please tell us about the range and type of projects you are involved in.
I am involved in interior construction projects in commercial, healthcare, life sciences, education, recording studios and more. They range in size from small one day labor projects up to large multi-floor fit outs. No project is too large or too small.
7. Anything else you would like everyone to know about?
I am getting married on the 29th of September! I am very fortunate to have found someone who both supports and encourages me as I continue to grow as a person and as a businessman.
