Interview by Kevin Zalewski

1. Welcome Kelly, please tell us about yourself.

I’m Kelly Bux, currently holding the role of Business Development Executive with Sage AV. Born and raised on Long Island, New York, I received my bachelor’s in international business management with a minor in Latin American Studies and a concentration in Hospitality and Tourism Management from Pace University in Pleasantville, New York, and was fortunate enough to graduate a semester early.  Immediately after graduation I fell in love with the health and fitness industry and became a Certified Personal Trainer, Strength and Conditioning Coach, and Nutritionist.  I founded multiple businesses and made a great name in this industry, including the opportunity to live for a year in Auckland, New Zealand while training athletes.  To support a work visa requirement in Auckland during that time, I also held the role of Business Development and Section Administrator of Transport and Infrastructure for a civil engineering firm called Beca.  That was my segway into the construction industry (albeit a world away).

2. Where do you work and what is your role? When/how did you get started there?

Upon returning to New York, I became the managing partner of a large sports performance training facility on Long Island, though when I gave birth to our first-born 2.5 years ago, the long hours on the turn (4 am start times, 10 pm closing times) did not make sense for the family life we wanted. So, I pivoted back into the construction industry and Business Development with Sage AV for Audiovisual Technology Integration presented itself.  I’ve now been with Sage AV for over 2 years.  And my husband and I have our 2.5-year-old daughter and 10-month-old son at home (& a 5-year-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi, named Waffle).

3. List some factors that contribute to your success

Becoming educated on cross-cultural communication in my studies at Pace University through my International Business Management degree led to my thesis on cross-cultural communication in the workplace, translating to the great experience I had while living and working abroad for a year in Auckland, New Zealand.  Having the perspective of different cultures, the work-life balance preferred by those you are collaborating with, and learning the “whys” of your trade partners and colleagues so that we can tap into effective implementation of bringing projects to completion.  I place strong importance on being strategic with my relationships — I believe business development is a transferable skill (throughout all industries) when you’re able to find commonalities and tap into human science.  I stay current with Leadership, Sales, and human science reading and continued education, and enjoy bringing back tangible action items for our team to utilize and implement for success.

4. Give advice to those starting their careers in Business Development

It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.  First impressions are great, but last impressions are EVERYTHING.  Follow your opportunities brought in through the entirety of the sales lifecycle.   Relationship-based is the foundation of continued new work.  And lastly, “Thoughts become things.”  Stay positive, stay disciplined, plant those seeds, and harvest what you grow.

5. What is your passion?

As humans, we’re social creatures.  I feel so fortunate that with the line of work that I’m in, I’m able to meet with interesting clients and accounts, discuss exciting projects, and use our creativity and expert knowledge to find solutions.  I’m a firm believer that you get further ahead as a team than individually; so being able to collaborate every day with intelligent, fascinating experts in their field within our industry is something I’m very passionate about and feel grateful for having.

6. Please tell us about the range and type of projects you are involved in.

Sage AV has capabilities and expertise in high-end residential and commercial projects.  We’re involved with builders, architects, interior designers, IT partners, owners’ representatives, and end-users in their projects throughout the tri-state including but not limited to the East End of Long Island, Westchester, NYC, NJ, and CT.  Because we are design-build, we appreciate being brought in early into projects and can assist with design work in any location.  We are finishing up multiple commercial projects in NYC including immersive-experience retail, social clubs, golf-performance facilities, office tenant fit-outs, and amenity spaces for MDUs.  Our residential work includes new builds interested in surround sound systems, integrated lighting controls, motorized shades, custom home theaters, outdoor audio and video, and integrated HVAC.

7. Anything else you would like everyone to know about?

If we haven’t yet met in person or via virtual call, please email me at or call 646.771.4006 so we can set up.  Our company is a testament to our character, and I value the relationships cultivated with our trade partners and end-users.
